The waters of Baja have always been a favorite sport fishing location and for good reason. Whether you're a fishing enthusiast or a first timer looking for a day on the water, Dr. Hino has you covered with the best fishing crew in town.
Many fish are caught each trip, in fact a recent outing was one of the best yet with over 100 kilos of fish caught just fishing around Santo Tomas Island using squid as bait, check out the photos below!
I went out with several workers to the local kelp beds in Northern Ensenada. It was about an hour boat ride. We used live mackerel and jigs to catch a total of 18 large yellowtails in the range of 25 - 32 pounds. Half of these yellowtails were caught in the early morning and the rest of them around noon. We had an unexpected treat to see up close, an 8 foot hammerhead shark just basking in the warm waters. We tried to catch it, but the shark was just to strong for our gear.
August 3rd: Another fishing trip for the books!
The regular group went out this Saturday morning. We left the docks at 3:00am for a 4 hour boat ride to the fishing grounds. About 1 hour after we started trolling feathers, we had a 4 fish hook up. All the poles that we were trolling went CRAZY! After about a 10-15 minute fight with these fish, we brought in 4 nice 25-30 pound Yellowfin Tunas. We continued to troll for more fish for the next 3 hours and ended up with a total of 12 Yellowfin Tunas. We then decided to go find kelp patties and try our luck looking for either Yellowtails or Dorados. We ended up with 4 good size Dorados. After about a few hours chasing Dorados, we headed back to the docks. All in all, another GREAT day of fishing. The fishing is only going to get better as we head into the late summer months.
July 26th: For our trip on Sunday the 26th of July we tried something different and with great success. Knowing that the water temperature was very warm, we decided to fish the kelp patties inside the island and go for Calico Bass. Well, we had another amazing day of fishing! We caught 55 Calico Bass between 2 to 6 pounds using just artificial lures and jigs, mainly swim baits. The bite was so good we decided to head back in by 11:30 a.m. Again, it really depends on what crew you have if you want to catch fish. We were listening to the radio and no other boat was having the kind of day we had.
July 12th: We went out on Sunday, July 12th and caught a variety of fish all inside the island. We caught 8 Yellowtails between 20-25 pounds, 5 Barracudas about 8 pounds each, and another 40 pound Bluefin Tuna, in fact below you will find the video of Dr. Hino pulling it in.
Fish were caught on live bait and jigs. The water and air temperature was excellent, it was like fishing on a lake. We expect to have another great year of fishing. If anyone is interested in chartering Dr. Hino's crew, please let us know through e-mail.
July 7th Update: Another GREAT day of fishing! We went went out at 6:00 am this past Tuesday and fished until 12:00 noon. We caught a total of 17 Yellowtails between the weight of 20 - 27 pounds using mostly live mackerels as bait. We jigged for the mackerels in the morning and had at least 100 mackerels for live bait. We only lost 3 Yellowtails to the seals leaving us with plenty more!
May Update: We are proud to report another successful fishing trip around the south side of Todos Santos Island. We caught 9 Yellowtails in less than 3 hours using jigs that were dropped to the bottom and reeled straight up. All Yellowtails were between 20-30 pounds (pictures below)! We also caught an assortment of bottom fish later in the morning all within just a few hours.
April Update: On our latest trip we were thrilled to snag the first Bluefin Tuna caught in Ensenada waters in 2015 (pictures below)! It was about 11:00am on Sunday morning April 12th that this 30 pound Bluefin Tuna was caught on a Tady Jig. There were plenty of Tuna boils on the surface and quite a bit of bird action as well. We also caught some Yellowtail and Bonita!
